What is an internet domain?

An internet domain is a name used as an address on the internet. For example: mywebsite.co.za is the internet domain. Most domain owners typically identify their website by adding www. to the front of their domain name. The www is a host (server) name. The last part of the name, .co.za, identifies the domain as a commercial (.co) domain in South Africa (.za). Names with the .com extension are considered to be international commercial domains.

Technically speaking, an internet domain translates an IP address (such as: 196.15.145.1) into a name that humans find much easier to understand and remember. That's one of the best reasons for owning a domain in your company's name; because it's easy to remember.

Why would I want my own domain?

If you're serious about establishing your business on the internet with a website, then an address like: www.yourdomain.co.za makes it easier for potential customers to find you, remember your website address, and they will take you more seriously.

If you only use the internet for email communication, then an email address like: yourname@yourdomain.co.za identifies you as a professional business person.

How do I get my own domain website or email?

Step 1: Register your domain. You need to register your domain name with an official domain registrar. If you have some technical expertise, then you can do this yourself. You'd need to visit an official domain registrar's website, fill out the necessary forms, providing them with the addresses of your (or your ISP's) DNS servers and contact information for the appropriate parties (technician, administrator, etc). Or, simply have 3hex register your domain and take care of it.

Step 2: Choose a hosting provider and hosting package. You'll need someplace to host your domain, website, and/or email. Whether you're a small business just starting out on the internet, or an established eCommerce business, We offer a range of hosting solutions designed to meet your specific needs.

Step 3: Start making the most of your business on the internet.
Get your website built and/or set up your email and you're off and running. Your website and email address are your company's representative to the online world, and it's important to 'dress for success.' Unless you've got a knack for web design, or an in-house web designer, it's best to let a professional web design company build your website. Do-It-Yourself jobs tend to look like DIY jobs; generally not the impression you want to give potential customers visiting your website.

Feeling overwhelmed? The internet can be an incredibly valuable tool in expanding your present business operations, enhancing communications, and increasing public awareness of your products and services. But, most small to medium sized companies don't have the time, financial, or technical resources to do all of this themselves. That's why it makes sense to go with an internet specialist that can provide you with all of the above services, and all at prices you can afford. That's why it makes sense to go with 3hex. Contact us today and let us put our experience to work for you.

What is DNS, and what is a DNS server?

DNS (Domain Name Service) is a service operated by ISPs and others. Simply put, DNS is the service on the internet that converts domain names to IP Addresses (those long numbers like 196.15.145.1) and back again, so humans can remember and understand them. Without DNS you'd have to remember the IP Address of every website you wanted to visit, and that would be extremely inconvenient.

A DNS server is a computer that's permanently connected to the internet and runs the DNS service. Typically, DNS servers are only owned and operated by ISPs and large companies that have the staff and resources to maintain their own permanent connection to the internet and the technical expertise to operate the servers.

3hex takes care of DNS, so you don't have to worry about it. Most small to medium sized businesses don't have the resources or the technical expertise to run their own DNS servers. Not to worry, though. At 3hex, the internet is our business. Leave the DNS to us.

How much does it cost to own a domain?

The costs depend on what type of domain you want. To own a domain, you only have to register it. Once registered, domains typically require an annual renewal fee.

Once you've registered a domain, then you need someplace to host it. Whether you plan to use your domain for a website and/or email, you'll need an ISP to host it for you. 3hex provides a wide range of domain hosting services, and you're sure to find one that fits your needs and your budget. You'll find more information and pricing here.

What is domain web hosting and why do I need it?

Domain web hosting is the provision of space on a web server for your website. A web server is a computer that is permanently connected to the internet and delivers your website to the visitor's web browser. Web servers are typically owned and operated by ISPs (and sometimes large companies). Simply put, web hosting is the rental of space on a web server for your website.

For your website to be viewable on the internet at an address like: www.yourdomain.com your website needs to be hosted on an ISP's web server. That is, unless you have the financial and technical resources to maintain your own permanent connection to the internet, and want to run your own web server. Most small to medium sized businesses find it much more cost-effective, and much less technically demanding to host their website and domain at an ISP, like 3hex.

What is website storage space?

Website storage space is the physical amount of space allocated to you for the storage of your website on a web server. In other words, it's the place your website's files are stored on a web server's harddrive. The amount of storage space allocated to you varies by ISP and the web hosting package you choose. Website storage space is typically measured in megabytes (mb).

What is web traffic and what does it mean to me?>

Web traffic is the amount of data being transferred from your website to its visitors over a period of time. Let's say that your website's home page (all the HTML and images) is 20kb (kilobytes) in size. Whenever someone views your home page then your website does 20kb of web traffic. If 50 people view your home page in one day, then your website will have done 1mb (megabyte) of web traffic for that day. If your home page gets 500 visitors in one day, then it will have done 10mb (megabytes) of traffic.

What this means to you... Most web hosting services provide you with a set amount of free web traffic for your hosted website. After this quota is met, then there is typically a charge for each megabyte of traffic thereafter. Charges for extra traffic can range from R0.50 per megabyte up to R2.00 per megabyte, depending on the hosting provider.

Don't let these figures scare you, though. An average new small business website does less than 250mb of web traffic in a month. Established business websites typically run at about 400mb - 500mb per month, and only busier sites tend to exceed these amounts. For these reasons it's very important to choose your web host and web hosting package carefully. If you're unsure how much traffic your website will do, then the best bet is to talk to your ISP or web host. They have the experience to determine the best package to suit your needs.
